Equipment Info

La Pavoni sets the bar for manual espresso machines with the Europiccola lever espresso machine. The classic, timeless style is accented by the polished chrome exterior with black accents. The machine has one simple control --- an on/off switch that powers up the stainless steel heating element. The indicator light lets you know when the machine is ready to pull a shot, and from there, it’s all you. Raise the arm to pull water into the group head and lower it to force it through the coffee grounds for an exquisite shot of espresso.

TRADITIONAL PORTAFILTER

The Europiccola features a traditional chromed brass portafilter that weighs an impressive 12 ounces – plenty of mass for superior heat retention and rich, sweet crema production. The machine includes 51 mm single and double portafilter baskets.

HEAVY DUTY HEATING FOR PLENTIFUL STEAM

The 20-ounce brass boiler is plated with food-grade nickel on the inside and gorgeous, shiny chrome on the outside. The stainless steel heating element brings the water to brewing temperature within five minutes. The internal thermostat continuously monitors pressure and the brass boiler maintains an even temperature for quality extraction and high-powered steam. A resettable thermal fuse turns the boiler off at 225 F to avoid overheating and damage to the boiler.

NO WAITING FOR STEAM

And speaking of steam, the heavy-duty boiler brings water to steam temperature fast. Once the temperature is up there, it’s ready to steam whenever you are – no need to wait between brewing and steaming. The all-metal steam wand foams milk for cappas or steams it for lattes and mochas. The Europiccola 8 also includes an automatic milk frother for those who’d rather take the easy way out.

I have a ponte vecchio lusso and wanted to try a manual lever, between temp control and the manual lever, the pavoni was much harder to master. With practice it is capable of great coffee. I found a temperature strip on the group to be great help.

This is a nice machine, but notice that you have the option to choose the chrome base. this makes for a much nicer looking machine and although it does not change the espresso you make (which can be good either way) it is worth the $50 to take a machine and make it a centerpiece.

This can make very excellent espresso if you use it right! Also, it can steam milk and make nice microfoamed cappuccino or latte. However, keep in mind they can only make 2-3 shots before getting to hot to brew anything. Still, it's a good choice for home use!

Brand Info

The La Pavoni brand is inextricably intertwined with the history of espresso and specialty coffee. The company was founded in 1905 when Desiderio Pavoni purchased the patent for the first espresso machine from Luigi Bezzera. His improvements to Bezzera’s design made the machine more functional and usable in a commercial setting. The first commercially successful espresso machine, the Ideale, ushered in a new era in coffee preparation and style. Within just a few years, the best cafés and hotel bars in the world boasted ornately detailed La Pavoni lever espresso machines.

In 1961, La Pavoni introduced its first manual espresso machine for the home market, the Europiccola, which featured a vertical boiler to heat the water and a lever to pull shots. From its introduction, La Pavoni was synonymous with style and distinction, and the Europiccola was no exception. It was used by no less of an arbiter of high-class, suave sophistication than James Bond, who pulled a shot from it for M. in the 1973 film, “Live and Let Die.”

Today, La Pavoni still offers Europiccola espresso machines, the Professional line of espresso machines, the Stradivari and other beautifully crafted and styled lever piston espresso machines for home use. La Pavoni also offers a full line of commercial espresso machines.
