What I'm Drinking (Higher Ground - Black Warrior Riverkeeper)

January 04, 2012

This is the sixth post on the coffees I’m working my way through. Up this time is Higher Ground’s Black Warrior Riverkeeper roast.

The bag is pretty snazzy as you can see and it does include a valve. One annoyance is there wasn’t a roast date on the bag. I’ve heard good things about Higher Ground, but I have to admit most of that was after ordering from them. How could I pass up ordering a blend with “Warrior” in the title? Apparently though part of the proceeds from this blend go toward helping Black Warrior Riverkeeper’s. You can find out more from the link at: http://www.blackwarriorriver.org/.

I couldn’t find out where exactly this coffee comes from, but they claim it has the following profile: “A clean, nutty coffee with a bright snap. This blend offers a rich flavor followed by a subtle and smooth lingering taste of milk chocolate.”

Cold Brew

I wrote a blog post yesterday detailing my cold brew attempt. What I failed to mention is that these are the beans I used. You can read more at my post here, but suffice it to say I was pleased with the results.

Aeropress(Coffee)

The beans were prepared using a burr grinder and brewed via Aeropress. I brewed at ~190F. Worked very well, smooth mouth feel and a bit of a pleasant aftertaste. The chocolate taste is strong with this blend.

Aeropress (Mocha)

The beans were prepared using a burr grinder and brewed via Aeropress (with 2% milk/Ghirardelli White Chocolate Powder). Wow, this was a good blend for a mocha, almost all of my drinks made with this blend have been turned into mochas after the first one. This is one blend that plays well with milk and/or chocolate.

Conclusion

This was my first blend from Higher Ground and I definitely happy with the blend. In the interest of full disclosure I will admit that I was a bit annoyed with them when I ordered the blend because it took a week before they shipped. To be honest, regardless of how good the blend was I would be hesitant about ordering from them again simply because I wouldn’t know when I would get the order. That said, if you’re one of those people that keeps plenty of extra coffee on hand and doesn’t order bag-to-bag, give Black Warrior Riverkeeper a try.
